Audi A2 History

Production of a compact five-door hatchback Audi A2 started in 1999 at a factory in the German city of Neckarsulm. This car was remarkable not only for the unusual design that makes it look like a minivan, but also because its body was entirely made of aluminum. Thanks to this creators, it was possible to significantly reduce the weight of the machine and, consequently, reduce fuel consumption.

The most economical version of the Audi A2 3L with a three-cylinder turbodiesel, special tires and a "start-stop" system, muffling the engine at stops, spent less than three liters of fuel per 100 km. However, the aluminum body was more difficult to manufacture, which made Audi A2 more expensive than its main competitor, the Mercedes A-class, and was in less demand.

Initially, the Audi A2 was equipped with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine rated at 75 hp. or a three-cylinder turbodiesel of the same size, developing the same 75 hp. Later, version 1.6 FSI (110 hp) equipped with a gasoline engine with direct injection of fuel, a 90-strong version of a 1.4-liter turbodiesel, and diesel power unit 1.2 TDI (60 hp) - it was he who stood under the hood of the economical modification "3L". Gearboxes - five-speed, mechanical or robotic.

The release of the A2 model was completed in 2005, 176 thousand cars were made.
